LABUAN – Labuan Chimney Run 2017 organiser, Absolute Encore (AE) an event organiser based in Labuan did sponsor 10 deaf runners from the Persatuan Orang Pekak Labuan to join in the run, which would be held on July 8, this year.
The run registration that was closed on June 3 recently recorded some 620 runners those registered to join in the event where most of them were from Labuan, Kota Kinabalu, Brunei, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur.
The event director, Leonie Ann Peter S. Gunsanad told that the main objectives of this run were to promote a healthy lifestyle and to boost one of the historic tourism spots in Labuan, which was a well-known mystery Chimney, located a Tanjung Kubong, Labuan.
“The chimney was rebuilt in the 80’s with twenty-three thousand pieces of red bricks which were imported all the way from England. With the height of 106 feet, the structure is similar as the one that was once built by the British and the usage of it is still a mystery up till today.
“This Labuan tourism icon had been awarded with the International Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice and Sustainable Development in 2013 in the category of historic building architecture.
“The international award by The Green Organisation, the United Kingdom allowed Labuan to be selected as The Green Ambassador 2014 for that category,” she said.
She said further that Labuan Chimney Run 2017 routes were selected to emphasize the scenic and beautiful natures of Lubok Temiang, Sungai Miri and Tanjung Aru where runners would experience two running surfaces such as road and hills.
There would be two categories in the run namely, the 11KM and 21KM that were open for men and women including veterans.
The flag off would be at 6am for 11km while 21km would be at 5am.
The winner in 11KM would receive cash prize worth RM300. In second and third place in the category would receive RM200 and RM100 cash respectively.
Meanwhile, the winner in 21KM category would receive RM600 cash prize, whilst in second and third would receive RM400 and RM200 each.
The participants in both categories would also receive run bibs, t-shirts, medals and certificates from the organizer.
The cut off time for the 11KM run would be two and half hours while 21KM run would be four hours.
Labuan Chimney Run 2017 was also co-organised by Labuan Sports Kickboxing Association (LSKA).
To make this event successful, Majlis Belia Labuan did extend their support for the event by sending at least 20 volunteers to assist during the run event.
This event were also supported by Jabatan Muzium Malaysia Wilayah Labuan, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Majlis Sukan Labuan, Majlis Belia Labuan, Labuan Corporation, PDRM, Pertahanan Awam Malaysia and Persatuan Orang Pekak Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan.
