UMSKAL offers new PhD in Islamic banking and finance

LABUAN – It is another milestone for Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) for recently opening up three new courses for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) namely in Islamic Banking and Finance, International Finance and International Banking.

The dean of Labuan Faculty of International Finance (LFIF), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hanudin Amin told that three courses were under LFIF in addition to the two available courses of International Business and International Marketing.

“The students intake for the three new courses is on this coming September. Subsequently, the students intake will be every February and September for each year. The mode of the study is by research (full and part time).

“Interested candidates can submit online application via the official website of Centre for Postgraduate Studies at https://smpp.ums.edu.my/application/Default.aspx .

“Candidates must send in their printed online application together with a copy of their academic transcripts and certificate and other relevant supporting documents, which have been certified true,” he said.

Hanudin told further that all programs offered by the faculty for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs including the new PhDs are recognized by Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).

LFIF was established back in May 1999 with a first intake of 356 students.

The faculty was well-known as Fakulti Kewangan Antarabangsa Labuan (FKAL) in Bahasa Malaysia among the local folks.

In terms of vision, the faculty was aiming at striving to become a centre for higher educational learning with global perspectives, which reflects Labuan as an International Financial Centre.

Presently, the Faculty is led by Dr. Hanudin and assisted by his deputies namely, Dr. Lee Hock Ann (academic), Dr. Rizal Hamid (research and innovation) and Dr. Mohd Fahmi Ghazali (student affairs).

The faculty offers five undergraduate programs in the area of International Finance, International and Offshore Banking, International Marketing, International Financial Economics and Islamic Finance.

While, for master’s degree programs offered by LFIF are Master of Finance (International Finance), Master of Finance (Islamic Finance), Master of Business (International Business) and Master of Business (International Marketing).

The faculty has nine PhD holders who can supervise prospective students.
They are the dean and his deputies, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Geoffrey H Tanakinjal, Assoc. Dr. Jude Woryanta Taunson, Prof. Dr. Norazah Mohd Suki, Dr. Suddin Lada, Dr. Anath Rau Krishnan.

In future, the faculty is in its effort to offer more master’s degree programmes in the area of international banking, finance and Islamic banking.
