The speculation of who will be the next chairman for Labuan Corporation (LC) continues as there is yet any sign for the appointment until this moment, but the folks of Labuan Island believed that it will be announced in the near future.
LC chairman post is a top post in the federal territory of Labuan and it is believed someone from Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties will be picked up for the post despite an urge from an opposition here that the position should be given to someone who is a non-partisan professional.
It is likely that a leader from Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) will fill the post as the federal territory is under the administration of Amanah where its minister, Khalid Abdul Samad is from the party.
Each component party in PH has been allocated on which state they will administer after they win in the 14th General Election for example PPBM (Bersatu) is now administering Johore, Perak and Kedah, PKR in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, Amanah in Malacca and Federal Territory, DAP in Penang, and Warisan in Sabah.
It could be say that the post of LC chairman is almost equivalent to ‘Menteri Besar or Chief Minister’ position in Labuan.
So, by considering the power allocation above, Amanah will be in charge of Labuan administration helped by its other component parties in PH.
However, there are rumours that Amanah is split into two groups in Labuan.
In local English newspaper dated in July 12 this year, the first group led by its pro tem committee chairman, Dr Ramli Tahir.
While, Dr Ramli’s deputy is Wan Abdul Rahim who is either the proposer or seconder for Labuan Member of Parliament, Datuk Rozman Isli during the nomination day in 14th General Election.
In the news report told that Amanah Labuan area would be officially unveiled by Amanah Federal Territory secretary, Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli.
Surprisingly, in the same newspaper dated in August 1, Dr Mohd Hatta is seen with the second ‘official’ group of Amanah, which refuted the first group’s claim.
The second group is led by Datuk Seri Amir Hussien together with his pro tem committee.
One of the members in the second group told that they proposed Amir to be the next chairman for Labuan Corporation.
When asked about the other component parties in Labuan such as PKR and DAP, the member replied that they also will have their respective positions in Labuan Corporation.
It is perceived that the second group has more advantages to garner ground supports from their branches in Labuan, as their chief is derived from Labuan and most of the leaders are coming from the island.
There is also rumours that some former Barisan Nasional’s leaders here are eyeing to jump ship into the first group of Amanah Labuan for their political survival.
Nevertheless, the decision to appoint the next chairman of Labuan Corporation is in the hands of the new federal territory minister, Khalid Abdul Samad.
What the people expect is any person appointed for the position must be someone who is responsible for the welfare of the people in Labuan and can bring positive changes for the island and its inhabitants.
